DALLAS

Cat videos are pure internet gold.

This is not necessarily breaking news, but you might not expect legitimate filmmakers to stoop down for kitty content like the rest of us do.

Not so fast, says Dallas VideoFest director and UT Arlington film professor Bart Weiss.

“These cat films go way back. The first one we found was from 1894, made by Thomas Edison,” Weiss said in an interview earlier this month with WFAA-TV meteorologist Colleen Coyle, the emcee for VideoFest’s second annual CatFest Thursday at Dallas’ Texas Theatre. “So all the way back to the birth of cinema, we have cat films.”

Weiss, of course, is also a proud cat dad.

It looks like we missed the deadline for video entries, which was Aug. 1. But don’t worry, the reel for this year’s show is already jam-packed with 80 minutes of cat videos from all corners of the globe, culled from public nominations in the categories of comedy, drama, animated, musical, action, vintage and documentary.

If we were able, we’d probably submit our video in the “drama” category. We feel like we’ve really captured the harrowing tales of Star-Telegram cat owners and the felines who run their lives.

Doors for the second annual Dallas VideoFest CatFest open at 6 p.m. Thursday, and the show will start at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15, and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to Operation Kindness, a no-kill animal shelter in Carrollton.
