Cheers: To radio station KAAM/770 AM “Legends” for the reminder to register to vote. Early voting in Texas for the March 1 primary elections starts Feb. 16.

Cheers: To TCU’s backup quarterback, Bram Kohlhausen, in the Alamo Bowl in San Antonio on Jan. 2. He personified the “never quit” attitude of TCU football. As the late coach Dutch Meyer used to say, “Fight ‘em till hell freezes over and then fight ‘em on the ice.”

 

Cheers: To the TCU Horned Frogs for their epic and historic Alamo Bowl win. Down 31 points at halftime and then to rally for a 47-41 win in triple overtime will be known as the “Miracle on the River Walk.” I’ve DVR’ed the game and watched the second half and the three overtimes several times — the first half not so much.

 

Cheers: To whoever paid for my dinner on Nov. 7 at the Olive Garden Italian Restaurant in Weatherford.

 

Cheers: To those who feel that Christianity is superstitious or narrow-minded, as it has resulted in many prayers being said for their benefit. Believing in Jesus Christ is actually a very educated and broad-minded attitude. Some believe futuristic Star Wars effects are possible, yet find it difficult to accept that a Creator is capable of so much more.

Cheers: To Dr. Rourk and his staff at Western Hills Animal Clinic. After a dog was hit outside our house, he stopped everything he was doing on Christmas Eve to assist me with the situation. He refused payment and was very comforting.

 

Cheers: To the family who bought our breakfast at the IHOP on Precinct Line Road on Christmas morning. I wish I could have thanked you in person. How very nice of you.

 

Cheers: To the employees of the McDonalds at DFW Airport, Terminal C, Gate 22. At Christmastime I left my jacket there and didn’t have time to get it before my plane took off. I called from California that night. One week later my plane pulled into Gate 22 and I was able to retrieve my jacket. There are still good people in the world.

 

Cheers: To the person ahead of me in the Starbucks drive-through who bought my order on Christmas Eve, and inspired me to do the same. You’ve given me a terrific memory and a new habit I can take home to Los Angeles.

 

Cheers: To radio station KLUV/98.7 FM and their sponsors for playing continuous Christmas music this season. It brightened my Christmas spirit.

 

Jeers: To the National Basketball Association and Hollywood who feel that Christmas Day, a major Christian holiday, should be celebrated with nonstop basketball games and movie premieres. Once again, I spent time with family and kept the TV off and stayed away from the movie theaters.

 

Cheers: To the gentleman who secretly paid for my dinner of soup at 9 p.m. on Dec. 23 at Buffalo West restaurant. He heard me tell the waiter that I was there alone because my husband was in the hospital. I will be forever grateful for his kindness.

 

Cheers: To Principal Richard Mitchell and the teachers and kids in the Strawn school district for the wonderful Christmas program. We came to see our grandkids, and the singing was really a priceless holiday memory that we will always cherish.

 

Cheers: To Encompass Home Health Care in Burleson for the excellent care I received from their staff. I was experiencing such dizziness that I couldn’t walk without a walker. With their help, I am now doing great. I would highly recommend them. They are truly a blessing.

 

Jeers: To those who didn’t respond when I asked for someone to donate a good-running pickup truck to me as a tax writeoff. Not one person called. There must be a lot of selfish people in the area.

 

Cheers: To the members of the Edgecliff Volunteer Fire Department. They made sure a guest made it into our home for a Christmas party. Everyone was so courteous, kind and accommodating. Thanks to each of you for making an elderly lady’s Christmas, and thanks to all of you for being great representatives of our city.

 

Jeers: To the people who take down their Christmas decorations the day after Christmas. The Christmas season runs until Epiphany, Jan. 6, the 12th day of Christmas. The 12 days of Christmas are the 12 days after Christmas — not the 12 days before Christmas.

 

Cheers: To the young man and the ladies who helped my husband change a tire in the parking lot in Arlington Memorial Hospital. We cannot thank you enough. May you have a happy and blessed new year. Thank you again.

 

Cheers: To the L.D. Bell High School Raiderettes, Uncle Bo’s, the Meyer family, Margarete Bell, the Wilganoskis, Adept employees, Fairfield Inn of Mansfield and Barbara for all of your donations for the Brown family Blessing Bags. Your selfless acts of kindness were able to feed, clothe and provide for 60 homeless people on Christmas Eve. Thank you!

 

Cheers: To the Korean War veteran who paid for the lunch of a World War II vet and his wife at the Iron Skillet Restaurant in Weatherford. Cheers also to the gentleman who found my cellphone in the Wal-Mart parking lot and refused a reward after returning it to me.

 

Jeers: To those who ignore that the Metroplex has two major universities. Southern Methodist University gets only the occasional line. Another reason to bless the Internet.

 

Jeers: To the elected politicians who have slowly been destroying America. Only the rich and big businesses matter anymore. It’s time American citizens come first and not foreigners. Our tax dollars should go only to U.S. citizens.

 

Cheers: To Cris Cannon, my Star-Telegram carrier. I’ve had some good carriers the past many years, but Cris tops then all!

 

Cheers: To whoever paid for my great meal at AA China Super Buffet in Burleson on Dec. 4. As I prepared to pay, the waitress said that someone had already done so. May God bless your kindness.

 

Cheers: To the gentleman with two youngsters and their grandmother who paid for our dinner New Year’s Eve at the Outback Steakhouse in Arlington. It really started our 85th and 90th years off with a good feeling. We will follow your example soon. Thanks to all of you and our waitress.
