A star was born earlier this year when Mitzy Guereca took the field for Castleberry in its first varsity soccer season.
She was among the leaders in the Tarrant County with 32 goals, added nine assists and was voted MVP for District 7-4A. She also made it to the Star-Telegram girls soccer super team.
Guereca hasn’t been playing long - only since she was 11 - but fell in love with soccer because of her family, especially her dad. She’d go to her dad’s games and after awhile, started to play and loved it.
The senior-to-be wants to play college soccer, but first and foremost, she wants to accomplish her dream since she was younger - to get a college education.
Never miss a local story.
Guereca also went into the school’s history books after she scored the first goal of the program’s first playoff game this past season. She has her sights on more goals and playoff wins next season.
What are you most looking forward to for next season?
GUERECA: Becoming a better player and to get past the first round of the UIL soccer playoffs. The other thing I am looking forward to is to beat my own goal scoring record from last season.
If you could play any other sport, what would it be?
GUERECA: I never really thought about any other sport but I would like to try basketball because it’s super competitive and physical as well. They don't think short girls can't play so I would work hard and show them anything is possible if you just try.
If you could play any other position, what would it be?
GUERECA: Keeper because that has been the only position I haven't actually played and it looks fun - the excitement of stopping people from scoring.
Do you like soccer or cross country better - how does one help the other?
GUERECA: I prefer soccer. As you know you have to be in shape because you have to run a lot so cross country helps to prepare my body, and keeps me well conditioned for the upcoming soccer season.
Most memorable moment this past season?
GUERECA: When I scored my last goal in our first ever varsity playoff game. Yes it was sad, but it was our first year to ever have a varsity soccer team and we made it to playoffs and I scored the first goal in our school’s soccer playoff history.
Career/Major plans in college?
GUERECA: Teacher/coach or an orthodontist.
What makes you different than any other person when it comes to sports?
GUERECA: What makes me different from others are my loved ones. My household is obsessed with sports. Soccer, for example , is a family thing. It's an obsession for us. My dad, uncles, cousins and sister all play or have played. There hasn't been a moment since I was younger that soccer didn't play an important part of my life and the lives of the rest of my family. It's such a big thing, that my cousins Hailey Rivera and Devin Guereca play on the high school soccer team with me. I love my family very much, and I'm glad I get to share our passion for soccer on a daily basis.
