Denton Guyer pours it on against Mansfield Lake Ridge

Mansfield Lake Ridge jumped out to a 17-point lead, but was buried under the avalanche of 34 unanswered points by the Wildcats in a 37-21 season-opening defeat Thursday at Newsom Stadium.

Key players: Guyer RB Kaedric Cobbs rushed for 101 yards and two scores on 18 carries, while teammate Devin Jefferson rushed for two touchdowns and 72 yards on 15 carries. Guyer DB De’Ray Darthard had two interceptions, including on returned 36 yards for a touchdown and teammate QB Luke Stillwell rushed for 102 yards on 13 carries. For Lake Ridge, QB Chandler Rogers had 124 yards on six carries and a 74-yard TD run on the first play of the game. Rogers also threw a TD pass, 36 yards to WR T.J. Graham; RB Dewone Jackson rushed for 93 yards on nine carries and a 78-yard TD.

Key stat: Lake Ridge scored the game’s first 14 points in seven plays. Guyer’s 34-0 comeback over the last three quarters came on 316 yards of offense.

Records: Guyer 1-0, Lake Ridge 0-1.
