Byron Nelson wins ASC Nike tournament, Arlington finishes runner up in Mansfield

A perfect 7-0 weekend for the Byron Nelson Bobcats, who won the Division I bracket during the ASC Nike tournament in Carrollton. The Bobcats beat Plano 25-20, 25-14 in Saturday’s championship match.

Nelson (8-0), which started the season with a win over at Keller on Tuesday, started the tournament with pool wins over Denton (25-20, 25-11) and Greenhill (25-14, 25-15). The Bobcats won their crossover match 19-25, 25-13, 26-24 over Lucas Lovejoy, Class 5A’s No. 3 team in the state.

The Bobcats began Saturday with wins over Denton Ryan, Weatherford and Frisco Reedy in the semifinals.

Senior setter Elle Duis (Colorado School of Mines commit) was named tournament MVP. Villanova commit senior hitter Sanaa Barnes was named to the all-tourney team.

Aledo and Weatherford finished in a four-way tie for fifth place. Senior libero Allegra Rivas (Aledo) and Texas A&M commit senior setter Kaitlyn Rogers (Weatherford) were all-tournament.

Paschal won the Gold Consolation bracket over Amarillo Tascosa 25-16, 25-21. The Panthers, who made history last season in winning the District 4-6A title, started rocky with two losses before winning five of their last seven including the final three over Denison and Lake Dallas.

Chisholm Trail, Saginaw, Crowley, Joshua, Azle and Haltom also competed in the Division I bracket.

Division II- Glen Rose, Class 4A’s No. 4 team in the state, won the Division II bracket over Callisburg 24-26, 25-18, 25-15. Godley also played in the gold bracket. Kennedale won the silver bracket 19-25, 25-18, 25-19 over Sunnyvale. The Wildcats won all four matches on Saturday against South Hills, Iowa Park and Anna. Eastern Hills also played in the Division II bracket.

Mansfield ISD

In the championship match of the Mansfield ISD tournament, Coppell defeated Arlington 25-15, 26-24. TCU commit senior hitter Katie Clark led the Colts with 10 kills and six digs. Taryn Cates and Laura Willis each had four kills, and Abbey Clay had 13 assists. Cates added a team-high 14 digs.

The Colts began the tournament on Thursday with wins over Burleson Centennial (25-17, 25-10), Eastwood (25-21, 25-10) and Lubbock (25-8, 25-6). Clark had 27 kills in three matches. Against Eastwood, Cates had five aces and Ashley Simpson had 15 assists.

Arlington went 2-1 during Friday’s pool play with wins over LD Bell and El Paso Franklin. The Colts defeated Lake Ridge in the quarterfinals on Saturday and Birdville in the semifinals. Clark made all-tourney.

Martin finished third and Birdville finished fourth. Martin beat Midland Lee and Denton Guyer on Saturday, and went 3-0 on Thursday. Senior hitter Emilie Ickes (McNeese State commit) was all-tourney.

Gold- In the quartefinals, LD Bell beat Fossil Ridge and Eaton beat Chapin. Northwest defeated Fossil Ridge and Timber Creek to win the consolation bracket. Fossil Ridge senior setter Cassidy Zellmer was all-tourney.

Silver- Mansfield won the silver bracket with a win over El Paso El Dorado 25-19, 25-13. The Tigers got past Brewer 20-25, 25-11, 25-11 in the quarterfinals and Keller Central 25-22, 25-12 in the semifinals.

Central beat Summit and Richland beat Timberview in the quarterfinals. Summit would go on to beat Brewer and Timberview to win the consolation bracket. Janya Johnson was all-tourney.

Bronze- Euless Trinity got wins over Plainview, Sam Houston and Lubbock to win the consolation bracket.

Pearland

Southlake Carroll, Class 6A’s No. 6 team in the state, ended the Pearland tournament as the highest area team, getting to the Final Eight. The Dragons started the tournament 5-0 by beating Clear Brook, Pasadena Memorial, Smithson Valley, Churchill and McKinney Boyd - and never dropped a set.

Carroll came up short with three-set losses to Plano East and Rouse. Sophomore hitter Annabelle Smith was all-tourney.

San Antonio Reagan won the tournament over two-time defending state champion Hebron. The Woodlands, Plano East, Rouse, Schertz Clemens, Carroll and Prosper rounded out the Top-8.

Colleyville Heritage finished 25th out of 80 teams Grapevine and Keller won four matches during the weekend. Granbury won three.

Jason Landers- Midlothian started the AISD tournament by winning four of its first five matches and went on to finish seventh overall out of 35 teams, and beat Tivy 25-16, 25-17 in the Gold bracket.

The Panthers also got wins over Eastview, Akins, Mabanks and TSD.

Ducanville- Midlothian Heritage upset Frisco Wakeland, Class 5A’s No. 7 team in the state, 25-20, 25-18 to win the Duncanville Tournament of Champions.

Ann Kang- For the third-straight year, Saginaw Boswell traveled across the Pacific to Iolani High School in Hawaii. The Pioneers, one of 16 teams on the islands, got a pair of wins over Mid-Pac and King Kekaulike.
