ARLINGTON

The rash of oblique strains continues its way through the Rangers’ clubhouse.

Right-hander Andrew Cashner was placed on the 10-day disabled list before Saturday’s game with a left oblique strain. It’s the same injury that has sidelined pitcher Cole Hamels and similar to A.J. Griffin’s left intercostal strain.

Cashner felt tightness during the second inning against the Astros on Wednesday. His DL stint is retroactive to Thursday.

“I let them know after the game, and over the off day — and then yesterday it didn’t really get any better,” Cashner said. The Rangers are hoping Cashner only misses one or two starts.

“I’m still pretty sore today, but on the MRI it didn’t turn out as bad as the other guys,” he said.

The Rangers called up right-hander Ernesto Frieri, 31, from Triple A Round Rock to add depth in the bullpen.

Frieri signed a minor league deal with the Rangers on June 6 after opting out of his contract with the Yankees on June 2. A seven-year MLB veteran, Frieri last pitched in the majors with the Rays on June 1, 2015. He threw one scoreless inning Thursday in his only appearance for Round Rock.

“[He] still had good stuff, good guy, competes,” manager Jeff Banister said. “He still has a good fastball, his secondary stuff has good shape. Similar to what we've seen in the past. When he gets it consistently in the strike zone it makes it challenging for the hitters.”

Frieri is 11-13 with 73 saves and a 3.55 ERA in 298 relief appearances in the major leagues.

Briefly

▪ Round Rock first baseman/outfielder Pete O’Brien has been designated for assignment. O’Brien was claimed off waivers from the Reds on May 27.
