TCU baseball rallies from five-run deficit to open Big 12 play with series win over Texas

By Drew Davison

March 24, 2019 08:56 PM

The TCU baseball team rallied from a deficit once again on Sunday.

The Frogs overcame a five-run deficit for a 12-8 victory over the Texas Longhorns, taking their Big 12 opening series 2-1.

Call it “Lupton Magic,” two days after overcoming a two-run ninth-inning deficit for a walk-off victory on Friday in the series opener. Texas (17-10, 3-3 Big 12) routed TCU in the middle game, but the finale ended in TCU’s favor.

The Frogs belted four home runs, stole multiple bases and entertained the 4,498 in attendance at Lupton Stadium.

TCU trailed 7-2 going into the bottom of the sixth, but Adam Oviedo — the hero from Friday’s walk-off win — launched a three-run home run with two outs to make it 7-5 by the end of the sixth.

Texas scored a single run in the seventh, but TCU answered with a two-run home run by Hunter Wolfe to make it 8-7. That was the fourth home run of the day by the Frogs, along with solo shots by Josh Watson in the first inning and Austin Henry in the fourth.

TCU pulled away in the eighth when it sent 10 men to the plate. The Frogs scored five times to take a 12-8 lead. Oviedo started the rally with an infield single, and Andrew Keefer and Wolfe delivered RBI hits.

TCU also benefited by an errant throw by Texas on a double play attempt, leading to two more runs. TCU’s Jake Guenther drove in the final run of the inning with a double.

TCU closer Marcelo Perez earned the win, retiring all four batters he faced. The biggest may have been striking out Lance Ford to end the eighth inning with two on and two out.

Sunday marked the second time this season TCU has rallied from a five-run deficit, along with the victory over Grand Canyon on Feb. 23.

TCU starter Brandon Williamson allowed five runs (three earned) on seven hits with three walks and five strikeouts over five innings.

TCU (15-7, 2-1 Big 12) returns to action on Tuesday. The Frogs will host the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley with first pitch set for 6:30 p.m.
